“”I am Hans Shilder, Herr Doktor, but I do not
know who this poor burned one is. I was coming
from my father’s little farm in the mountains
beyond La Rocque Castle. Always, my dog Troll
and I have to start with the milk before daylight.
You know the stories they tell about La Rocque
Castle, Herr Oberdoktor?”
“Yes, yes, of course. Hurry. I must get back.
Tell me where you found him and– “
“I am coming to that, Herr Oberdoktor,” the
boy cut in breathlessly. “I am always afraid going
past the cliff of rock on which stands the ghost
castle. This morning I heard someone move
beside the road and next I heard a most awful
sound– like he made just now. Mein dog, Troll,
was sniffing and turning out of the road to the
right. There I found him, Herr Oberdoktor. I
wanted to run, but my legs would not carry me
away.”
The Herr Oberdoktor frowned.
“Did you hear him mention any name?”
“Nein, mein Herr. I could understand very
little that he said. He made me understand that he
wanted to be brought to the hospital.
“You did well,” the Herr Oberdoktor smiled.
“You are a brave lad.”
He patted the boy’s shoulder, then he hurried
into the hospital.
The Oberdoktor’s assistant met him inside
with a shake of his head. Walking rapidly down
the corridor beside the Oberdoktor, the assistant
spoke with marked excitement.
“There is no use, Herr Oberdoktor. He
cannot– he must not live. He would be horrible to
look at– too horrible to force upon normal
humans. Already the flesh is falling from his
face.”
They reached the door of the operating
room. Herr Oberdoktor gave a short nod and
passed inside.
“We shall see,” he said.
There, over the operating table, the Herr
Oberdoktor and his assistant worked long hours.
At the end, the Oberdoktor shook his head.
“Only by a similar miracle such as that which
kept him alive thus far, can he go on living.”
But the great burned corpse did live.”
