The third Fiends Of the Eastern Front novel opens towards the end of the Second World War – the siege of Leningrad is broken, and the Eastern front counterattack has begun, as the Germans retreat.
Rumania surrenders, and joines the Allies – which means the Russians disband their vampire hunting units as Constanta and company have gone over to their side. Particularly galling for Victor, Eisenstein and Mariya is when choosing insurgency work over going back to a penal unit, they are forced to work for Constanta’s second in command, Gorgo.
At the time Romania flips the Vollmer brothers have just been reunited, and are ordered to go and help one of Constanta’s human collaborators, taking him supplies. Being closer to the news, they are further updated than he is, so they see this as an opportunity to strike.
It isn’t all that easy though, as the book has multiple sections, this part, another, and through the Fall Of Berlin – with the menace of Constanta and his and the master vampire’s plan for the world.
A fine series that holds up through all three books, so very well done.
