52 Titles Announced

So Far with rumours included, 39 known of

Superhero Titles 37

Bat Family 10
Super Family 4
Emo Rainbow Family 4
Justice Teams 3
Other Super 16

The breakdown there shows the oddness of having your major event be Flash centred, too. The Emo Family have obviously been promoted into the upper tier, but Flashes exist to die in crises and have one solid solo title it seems, throughout history.

Other Titles : 2 (Swamp Thing?, My Greatest Adventure??)

No sign much at all of the other genres Jim Lee mentioned. Other genres may of course have meant Superheroes-Science Fiction, Superheroes-Western, Superheroes-Horror (Deadman) etc. What is odd about this with the sensible digital leap is that the Vertigo titles are not included here – and are consistently lower sellers as periodicals in general. So strange. 13 titles to go and with rumours at least some of other will be superheroes.

The breakdowns by actual title and rumoured titles can be found at the end.

The above is of course guessing, and counting titles like Green Lantern Corps as 50/50 – e.g. when the GLs come back to Earth they invariably are in the USA. The Earth ones are all from the USA, etc. Aquaman is either commanding whales or hanging out in San Diego.

Half a person might seem silly, but there are two scenarios. What do you call Korean-American Jim Lee or similarly George Perez? Obviously been in the USA a long time, those lads, but benefit of the doubt there. Half a female artist being Williams’ offsider on Batwoman Reeder in this case. The 1.5 female writer is because of Gail Simone’s team-up with Ethan Van Sciver.

On the gender front, so far this is pathetic. You know who I miss? Devin Grayson. Presumably off doing something more lucrative (or useful) with her talents but they could certainly use her. No sign of Scott or Conner anywhere? I certainly don’t expect 50-50, but something approaching 80-20 should be achievable, surely?

Geographically I imagine this will get more USA-centric as the unknowns are revealed. It is quite clear there is a trend to employing artists from other countries – Spain, Brazil, Philippines. All presumably cheaper to hire, although not so much as they were, apparently. Still a good thing.

They appear to be loath to giving up writing control to outsiders, though. Although occasionally someone from the UK or Canada gets a look in. A bit more difficult than the artist scenario, of course, as you have to be better than your average person in writing competency to be a writer, you expect. Therefore this is going to be a little more limited in possibilities than artists, where a Bat-symbol is the same in any language. English is clearly the world’s second language now thanks to IT, so this should be less of a problem. Obviously the financial situation makes US dollars far less attractive for people from India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, etc. than it was a year or two ago to become a Northern Hemisphere media giant freelance peon. Zero signs of Japanese talent, either.

Really, if you are going to open up to digital and see you can sell comics to the world – and even though they are very American, pretty sure people all over the world like Batman and Superman and Wonder Woman, then you are going to have to unclench and let some of their talent tell a few stories. We know the USA is far the most right of the Anglosphere, and on the control freak front too, but that won’t cut it in the 20th century. Writers from over countries would have to be good for your PR and profile if they happen to be multilingual, too. You’d think over several decades and untold thousands of comics they’d have managed a mini-series or two set in Belgium, Chile, New Zealand or Fiji. But no.

A big break and opportunity has been created, but letting themselves down here, it seems. The insularity of the market in the USA (where I have seen Australians subtitled on MTV) is of course a problem, but is partly created by make-and-remake everything American media companies that both DC and Marvel are part of. Then you have the problem of the local writers being unable to create a character that is not American if they aren’t named after a cartoon animal, or a myth. You know how you have lots of fans all over the world? And even back in the Dark Ages you got people to come up with character designs or ideas. If your writers are so uneducated and uninformed then hey, editors, ask people on the internet for a few ideas. Hold a contest, give away a few t-shirts and I am sure you’ll get a ton of ideas that some guy from Cleveland wouldn’t have had a chance of finding out about in a million years.

That being said, Mister Terrific and an African Batman are interesting choices. And if you want team him up one story with Grace Choi that would be a good one. Through in a Belgian super-monk and a South American detective, and can you say Heroes For Hire inter-company crossover?

Main Character(s)

83% USA 32.5
17% Other 6.5

82% Male 32
18% Female 7

Here again there is a bit of guesswork on teams if not known, assuming say 15-25% or so female representation, which is somewhat high, given history, but perhaps a bit more likely now. And around 50-50 for a Legion Lost title.
